Start with the exact product claim

Waterproof and water-resistant are useful labels only when you understand what the manufacturer means for that product. Ask what exposure is covered, which rooms are permitted and what installation details are required. A short display label is not the whole warranty.

Compare the written instructions and warranty for the exact collection and product you are considering. Different products within the same broad flooring category can have different requirements and exclusions.

A surface claim is not a room-wide guarantee

A floor covering and the structure beneath it are different things. Ask what happens at joints, perimeters, doorways and penetrations, and whether the manufacturer calls for particular accessories or sealing details. Do not extend a claim about a plank to an assumption about the whole room.

Active leaks and signs of moisture need assessment before new flooring is installed. Covering the area does not resolve the underlying source. Tell us about any past water incident so it can be considered during planning.

Tile still needs an appropriate assembly

Tile and grout should not be treated as the entire waterproofing system. In wet areas, the layers and connections behind the visible finish are part of the design. A shower, for example, requires a suitable assembly rather than a floor tile chosen solely for its appearance.

This is why a tile quote should explain the relevant preparation and waterproofing scope, not just the square footage of tile being installed.

Questions to ask before you choose

  • Is this exact product approved for the intended room?
  • What type of water exposure does the warranty address?
  • Are there time limits, maintenance conditions or exclusions?
  • What installation details are necessary for the claim to apply?
  • Does the warranty address only the flooring or other damage too?
  • What cleaning products and methods are permitted?

Think about the way the room is used

An entrance with wet boots, a kitchen with everyday spills and a shower floor present different conditions. Describe the actual use rather than asking whether a product is simply “good with water.” The more specific the situation, the more useful the recommendation can be.

Also consider how quickly spills are usually noticed and cleaned up, and whether nearby fixtures have a history of leaking. Those are practical selection questions, not reasons to expect any material to be indestructible.
